Lacrosse Fact Sheet

Lacrosse, or Baggataway as it was known, originated with the native American Indians and involves speed, power, courage, precision, endurance, fair play, thrill and solid contact. A fast, high scoring sport where two teams compete on a field 55m x 100m to score goals in the opposition "goals" (metal frame 1.8m x 1.8m in size with net) placed 73m apart.

The lacrosse stick consists of a straight handle made of wood, aluminium or graphite with a plastic head containing a net for catching, scooping, carrying and throwing the hard rubber ball.

Each team fields 10 players and substitutes are allowed varying from 6 (club) to13 (international). Lacrosse is a body contact game and players wear protective equipment to avoid injury.

Sofcrosse - a soft version of lacrosse played with plastic sticks, a plastic ball and no contact.
Modcrosse - is a transition game between sofcrosse and lacrosse. Modcrosse is played with actual
lacrosse sticks, a soft rubber ball with no body contact.
These two modified games are very popular school programs.
